TRANSPORT

Travelling is essentially using different modes of transport to go places.

And there are just so many types of transport available for when you are exploring new places.

Private Transport

Using a vehicle that is solely for your private use has many advantages.

- you can choose where you go each day
- you can go when you want to
- there is no sharing with strangers (although sometimes that is half the fun)
- you have somewhere to store your gear while you are looking around (keeping in mind that tourist vehicles are often considered an easy target
- great when you have children to organise, and keep safe

PRIVATE TRANSPORT can take many forms:

- RENTAL CARS

• This is such an easy way to get mobile without having to work to anyone else's schedule.

• Rental cars of all shapes and sizes are readily available, with plenty of choice in comfort and style.

• Often there are deals available if you want to keep your costs down. For example, if you rent a car for the weekend can be cheaper than on weekdays. Or you may do the car company a favour by relocating the vehicle from one city to another.

• I have always found using a reputable company really important. The whole point of getting a rental is to go where you want, and when you want. So you don't need car problems stopping your fun and wasting your time. Well known companies such as Apollo Car Rentals New Zealand are the best place to look, particularly as they have many branches throughout the country who can help you along the way.

- YOUR OWN PERSONAL VEHICLE (if you can drive to your holiday)

- RVs / CAMPERVANS / MOBILE HOMES : This is a personal favourite of mine.

• You don't have to unpack the car each time you arrive somewhere new, and you have a ready made place to rest on both busy days and quiet days!

• It's great when the kids get dirty, you can just grab some fresh clothes and get on to the next activity.

• And the problem of storing snacks and food in the car is solved by the in-built refrigeration.

• Plus you still get to enjoy the great outdoors without the hassle of a tent.

- PRIVATE PLANE (doesn't that sound like a great way of getting around!)

Private Tours

Private tours are a growing trend.

It is really a cross between traveling on your own, and traveling with a group. You get the benefit of a guide with great local knowledge, while ultimately still being in control of your itinerary.

There are some fantastic companies emerging that link you up with guides. Instead of booking a guided tour, you are booking a tour guide!

Public Transport

The public option is also a popular choice, particularly among what are known as "independent travellers" often students or retirees.

These are individuals who are not travelling in a tour group or with a family, but rather by themselves, or as a couple, or small group.

Working with what is already on offer generally offers a cheap, interesting way of really experiencing the local way of life. Whether by bus, train or commercial airline, you just check the schedule, make your plans, book the ticket or pay your money.

Group Travel

Tour groups would probably use a combination of both public and private transport depending on:

- what is available
- cost

- the size of the group
For example, it is quite likely that a tour group would fly on a public airline. And then hire a bus or minivan for their private use once they get to their destination.

But another example that is equally likely is using the private option by chartering a plane to get to their destination. And then once the group has arrived they may like to use local, public transport such as a bus or train for getting around and to experience the location.

Or any combination of the above!!!

Isn't that one of the joys of travelling? Trying new things, and doing it differently to how you may have done it at home or in the past?
