Primary Schools Cambridge

There are a number of primary schools in Cambridge township, plus many more country schools around the periphery of town.

Choosing an education path is such a personal process for each family, so I have simply listed below the names of as many local schools as I could identify.

Then I have included a Government website that publishes the Education Review Office (ERO)reports. ERO is a government department that audits all schools on a regular (usually 3 yearly) basis to ensure they are performing as required.
This is just one way of assessing the suitability of a school.

Within Cambridge town boundary:

Leamington Primary Years 1 - 6

Cambridge Primary Years 1 - 6

Cambridge East Primary Years 1 - 6

St Peters Catholic Primary Years 1 - 8

Outside the town boundary (country schools):

Rotorangi Primary Years 1 - 8

Kaipaki Primary Years 1 - 8

Hautapu Primary Years 1 - 8

Goodwood Primary Years 1 - 6

Te Miro Primary Years 1 - 8

Cambridge Montessori Primary at Te Miro Years 1 - 8

There is some zoning enforced which means unless you live within the designated zone for the school you may not be able to send your children there.
The rules are different for each Primary, and this could become a significant factor in your house rental in Cambridge choice.

In general, Primaries cater for students aged from 5 years old for a period of 7 years (Year 1 - Year 8). However, some Primaries only have students for a period of 5 years (Year 1 - Year 6).

Intermediate or Middle Schools Cambridge

Cambridge Middle School is the only one catering specifically for the Year 7 & 8 students before they begin High School (or College) at Year 9 (approx. age 13).

A number of the primary schools Cambridge have students right up to Year 8 though (see the list above).

Another alternative is to send your child to Hamilton from Year 7 onwards.

A couple of options familiar to Cambridge parents are:

Berkeley Middle School - this is for Years 7 - 9, and is in the suburb of Hillcrest, Hamilton. Cambridge students are not in the zone for Berkeley but there are some places available by ballot each year.

Southwell School - this is a private full primary on Peachgrove Road, Hamilton. Entry is determined by an application and interview process.

Secondary, Colleges or High Schools Cambridge

There is only one public High School;
Cambridge High School.
This is for Year 9 - Year 13 students; boys and girls.

There is also a private Secondary;
St Peter's School - just outside the town boundary.
St Peter's caters for students from Year 7 to Year 13, and is one of the private schools that form the Independent Schools of New Zealand.

And again, there are a number of options in Hamilton chosen by Cambridge parents for various reasons:

St Paul's Collegiate - boys only Years 9, 10. Co-ed Years 11, 12, 13.

St Johns' College - boys only.

Sacred Heart College - girls only.

Waikato Diocesan - girls only.

Hamilton Boys High

Hamilton Girls High

Each of the above Hamilton Colleges have varying entry criteria and fees depending on whether they are public, private or integrated.

New Zealand School Qualifications

New Zealand Secondary Schools offer a range of national and international qualifications.

In recent years the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) has become the national qualification for senior secondary students. NCEA is part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Students may be able to study toward qualifications other than NCEA while they are at school. These may be instead of NCEA, or as well NCEA.

You will find a lot of information and statistics about all New Zealand Schools at the NZQA website (New Zealand Qualifications Authority).

A number of schools now also offer internationally recognised qualifications.
