Who Are We?
A group of dedicated parents have formed the Montessori Education Trust for Cambridge and Waipa (METCAW).The main purpose of METCAW is to provide a quality Montessori education and learning facility to children in the Cambridge, Waipa District. METCAW established a 6 — 9 years old Montessori classroom at Te Miro primary school in July 2008. The establishment of this class room was brought about by a small group of dedicated parents, who worked tirelessly to achieve a goal that many people thought would never happen.METCAW is a Registered Charitable Trust, an Incorporated Society and NonProfit Organisation. METCAW is also a member of the Montessori Association of New Zealand (MANZ). What Is Montessori?
The Montessori method of teaching was developed by Maria Montessori in the late 1900’s.With the opening of Montessori's first school in 1907 in Rome, her surname became associated with schools that used her educational approach to children as well as her educational materials tailored to children's developmental needs. Many schools throughout the world implement her approach to education for a wide range of ages. "From the moment the child enters the classroom, each step in his education is seen as a progressive building block, ultimately forming the whole person, in the emergence from childhood to adult. All focus is on the needs of the child." One distinguishing feature of a Montessori school is that children direct their own learning, choosing among the sections of a well structured and stocked classroom, including Practical Life (fine and gross motor skills), Sensorial (senses and brain), Language, Mathematics, Geography, Science, and Art.
Montessori...
A way to nurture and inspire the creativity, curiosity, leadership, love and imagination that lies within us all.Education with a focus on partnership, independence, mutual trust and respect, on individual achievement and collaboration, and on the development of minds and hearts. Each child is treated as a unique individual, allowing him/her to develop optimally at his/her own pace in a peaceful, non-competitive atmosphere. Teaches self – discipline, and respect for self, others and the environment. Respects children and their natural ability and desire to learn.Recognises the sensitive periods in children’s lives where certain skills are learned readily. Focuses on the unique needs and gifts of each child.
Our Classroom
The Montessori Classroom is bright, warm and inviting. The shelves are filled with intriguing learning materials which enable children to develop thinking through hands-on learning, and to become actively engaged in the learning process. The role of a teacher is to introduce children to materials and then remain a "silent presence" in the classroom. We have a well-equipped classroom that is developing all the time. Montessori at Te Miro School is very fortunate to have beautiful, rural surroundings and lots of room for our children to play.

Our Teachers
We have a wonderful, qualified Montessori teacher. The experience she brings is invaluable, and our children truly benefit. We also have a fantastic teacher aide who brings a wealth of teaching and life experience to our classroom, and is a great help for our teacher and children.
Our Future
The Montessori philosophy operates in 3 year age groups. Now that the 6-9 year class has been established our focus for our Montessori school is on establishing the 9-12 year class to accommodate the next stage of their learning. We are working with the Te Miro school community to achieve this in a way that is beneficial to the entire school.
